Brinton Base STEM

Greetings and Welcome to the Brinton Environmental Base Program!

One month prior to your arrival at Brinton Environmental Center we ask that you provide us with a final count of participants, itinerary, and STEM syllabus or outline.

Your organization should arrive between 2:00 and 6:00 pm on the first day of your STEM Conference. Upon arrival Brinton Environmental Center Staff will check you into our facility, give you a tour of the property, outline participant expectations, and show you to your rooms.

Organizations who have arrived early in the afternoon will have the opportunity to complete a swim review, check out snorkel equipment, and complete a snorkel lesson. Organizations arriving later in the afternoon will complete the process the next morning following breakfast.

Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm each day of your STEM Conference.

Following dinner, BEC Staff will outline your itinerary and provide a slideshow depicting the one living coral reef in North America. Elements of fish and coral identification, coral reef conservation and restoration, and proper etiquette will be covered.

Lights out is strictly adhered to at 10:00 pm. Between which times classroom space will be available for use.

Breakfast will be served at 8:00 am all mornings at Brinton Environmental Center. Those organizations who have completed the swim review- snorkel lesson will begin by packing lunch at 9:00 am for the days snorkel excursion. Those who have not , will pack lunch after completing the review- lesson.

Please note that any participant who does not pass the swim review or refuses to participate in the review will not be allowed to snorkel. The individual will be permitted and in some cases required to accompany the group to sea.

Once lunches have been packed and all participants are present, your organization will board one of our dive vessels. Prior to embarking our captain will issue a safety briefing. While aboard all participants are expected to adhere to any and all safety briefings given by the captain or boat mates.

Your organization will then spend the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon exploring the Underwater Wilderness.

For those units participating in the 3 day program the afternoon will be spent in the classroom under your direction, traveling to Key West or wildlife centers such as Turtle Hospital, Dolphin Research Center, Bahia Honda, returning to base at 6:00 pm for dinner service.

Please note that most of the wildlife centers in the Florida Keys require an additional fee or suggest a group donation.

Units participating in the 2 day program will spend the remainder of the afternoon prior to departure being led on guided kayak or paddle-board excursions.

Day 3 of your STEM Conference will begin with breakfast at 8:00 am. After breakfast BEC staff will lead your organizations on guided kayak and paddle board excursions prior to and following lunch on base.
